Sueoka Store Revitalization

ARCH 341: Intermediate Design Studio A - Professor: Joyce Noe

Maintaining character

In rural Kauai sits the town of Koloa displaying a prominent connection to historic Hawaii through its architecture, businesses, and culture. The Sueoka Store has been a landmark of its community for many years as it has brought food and smiles to many locals and tourists alike. When remodeling a store of such significance, an architect’s responsibility lies with the owner, the customers, and the surrounding ohana. Design decisions are informed to maintain a strong attachment to the building’s unique past and create new connections to form future memories.

Establishing Place

One place for all

Being in beautiful Kauai, this space has ample opportunities for bright sunlight on your skin but is balanced by existing shade trees and a prominent overhang that provides shade for those walking or in stores. The pedestrian experience engages with the main road and parking in a safe and deliberate manner with intriguing pathway designs and an interlocking bridge.

Final Design

Providing an experience

In order to maintain the current character of Sueoka, the storefront features classic parapets and colors as seen in historic Hawaii. To enhance the sense of place, lava rock is featured in the wall structure but is balanced by light storefront windows. As walkways below are shaded, a rooftop garden further cools the space and brings users to new views with ease.
